Trichy: The Trichy Fort police on Monday arrested a 45-year-old man from Ariyalur district on charges of stealing a six-sovereign gold chain from the pocket of a two-wheeler rider who had given him a ride. The incident highlights the risk of trusting strangers, even when offering help.

Incident Details

According to police, the victim, R Ayyappan, 35, works as a loadman in Gandhi Market. On Monday morning, he was riding his two-wheeler from Chathiram bus stand to Singarathope for work. The accused, identified as V Veeramani of Udayarpalayam, approached Ayyappan and requested a ride to the Fort railway station, claiming he needed to catch a train. Ayyappan agreed to help.

The Theft

During the ride, Veeramani allegedly noticed that Ayyappan was carrying a gold chain in his shirt pocket. Seizing the opportunity, he suddenly asked Ayyappan to drop him off back at Singarathope, stating that he had missed his train. Unsuspecting, Ayyappan complied. After traveling some distance, he realized the chain was missing from his pocket.

Police Action

Ayyappan immediately filed a complaint with the police, who registered a case. Using CCTV footage from the area, the police identified Veeramani and arrested him. The stolen gold chain was recovered from his possession. Further investigation is underway.
