Six Youths Arrested in Trichy for Alleged Filmed Assault and Social Media Upload
In a shocking incident in Trichy, six young individuals have been apprehended by police for their alleged involvement in a brutal attack on a 22-year-old man, which they filmed and subsequently uploaded as a social media reel. The authorities disclosed the arrests on Sunday, highlighting the disturbing nature of the crime that has sparked widespread concern.
Details of the Assault and Victim's Condition
The victim, identified as V Subash, a 22-year-old electrician hailing from Melarasur, was subjected to a violent assault near Orathur in the Pullambadi block on April 1. According to police reports, the accused, who were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, not only attacked Subash with weapons but also recorded the entire incident. Subash sustained significant injuries during the assault and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Trichy Government Hospital. He was rescued by passers-by who intervened, potentially saving his life.
Root Cause and Sequence of Events
The police investigation revealed that the attack originated from a dispute that occurred just a day earlier. Subash had objected to rash driving by an acquaintance named Paventhan, which allegedly triggered the retaliatory violence. On April 1, a group of six individuals—A Saraboji (25), S Suresh Kumar (24), R Sivakumar (20), M Mugilan (20), S Inbaraj (19), and N Thillainathan (20)—reportedly took Subash to a secluded location near a cremation ground. There, they subjected him to verbal abuse and physical assault using weapons, all while filming the horrific act.
Social Media Aspect and Arrests
In a disturbing twist, the accused also recorded videos of themselves engaging in celebratory behavior during the assault, including dancing and mimicking scenes from the popular Tamil film Ghilli, while brandishing weapons. This footage was later uploaded to Instagram under the title "Happy Enjoyment", drawing public outrage. Based on a formal complaint filed by Subash's mother, Maheswari, the Kallakkudi police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of attempt to murder. An intensive investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of all six accused. However, Paventhan remains absconding and is still at large.
Police Response and Warning
In response to the incident, the police released a compiled video that includes the original reel and an apology from the accused, in which the youths urged others not to emulate such violent acts. Superintendent of police S Selvanagarathinam issued a stern warning, emphasizing that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who creates or shares violent content on social media platforms. This case underscores the growing issue of digital violence and the urgent need for accountability in online spaces.
