Trichy Teacher Sentenced to 20 Years for Sexual Assault Under Pocso Act
In a landmark verdict, a 44-year-old government school teacher near Trichy has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a student over a prolonged period. The case, tried under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, highlights the severe consequences for such heinous crimes.
Details of the Case and Conviction
The accused, identified as J Kumaravel from Musiri, worked as a mathematics teacher at a government school near Thuraiyur. In 2019, he befriended a 14-year-old girl who was a Class 9 student at the school. Over time, he developed an inappropriate relationship with her, promising marriage to gain her trust. This manipulation led to repeated sexual assaults over three years, from 2019 to 2022.
The abuse remained hidden until 2022, when the victim, then about 17 years old, disclosed the incidents to her family. Promptly, her family reported the matter to the police, leading to Kumaravel's arrest shortly after the complaint was filed.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
A case was registered at the all-women police station in Musiri under Section 5(l) read with Section 6(1) of the Pocso Act for sexual assault. Additionally, charges were filed under Sections 366 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for abduction and wrongful confinement, respectively.
The case underwent a three-year trial in the Trichy mahila court. On Monday, judge D Shanmuga Priya delivered the verdict, finding Kumaravel guilty of all charges. The sentence includes 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a total fine of 20,000 rupees, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses.
Appreciation for Police Efforts
Trichy district superintendent of police S Selvanagarathinam commended the police team for their thorough investigation and successful efforts in securing the conviction.
