Two Arrested in Latur Girl's Hostel Death, SC/ST Act Invoked

In a tragic incident that has sparked public outrage, the Latur police have arrested two women in connection with the death of a 12-year-old girl at a residential school hostel. The arrests were made on Tuesday, with the accused being produced before a local court and remanded in police custody until Friday.

Details of the Sensitive Case

The victim, a Class VI student, had been residing in the girls' hostel since July 2025. She was found hanging inside the hostel premises on Sunday. Acting swiftly on a complaint filed by the grieving family, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR). The complaint alleged that the young girl had been subjected to severe mental and physical harassment prior to her death.

Latur Superintendent of Police, Amol Tambe, emphasized the sensitivity of the case. "This is a highly sensitive case. We acted promptly, collected scientific and documentary evidence, and arrested the accused based on the material available so far," SP Tambe stated. He assured that the investigation is being conducted transparently and that no guilty person would be spared.

Legal Framework and Evidence Collection

The police have booked the accused under multiple stringent sections. The case has been registered under BNS sections 108, 115(2), and 3(5). Additionally, sections 3(2)(Va) and 3(1)(r) and (s) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked.

A thorough procedural investigation was launched immediately. On Sunday, a spot panchnama (scene of crime inspection) was conducted in the presence of two government witnesses. The entire process was documented through videography and photography using the official e-Sakshya application. Following this, an in-camera postmortem was performed by a medical team to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Public Outcry and Ongoing Investigation

The incident triggered widespread anger and grief in the community. On Monday, Latur witnessed protests and agitation by various groups demanding strict and immediate action against those responsible. The public pressure underscored the need for a swift and just investigation.

Based on the prima facie evidence gathered, the police arrested the two women, who are associated with the hostel administration. Authorities have recorded statements from school and hostel staff, along with other witnesses. To ensure a comprehensive probe, a special investigation team under senior officers has been constituted. The police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking loss of a young life.
