Two separate burglary cases were reported in Kolkata's Lake Town area on May 1, raising concerns among residents about a possible pattern of targeted break-ins in residential pockets during temporary absences of occupants, police said.
First Incident in Block A
In the first incident, Shanta Jana, a resident of Block A, Lake Town, lodged a complaint stating that her house was looted between April 25 and April 27. She and her family were away at their ancestral home in Bagnan for a puja. Upon returning on the evening of April 27, she found the lock of the main gate broken and valuables missing.
According to the complaint, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 27 lakh were stolen, along with Rs 1 lakh in cash. The stolen items reportedly include multiple gold necklaces, bangles, rings, antique jewellery belonging to her late mother, and a collection of old coins.
Second Incident in Dum Dum Park
In the second incident, Debala Das of Dum Dum Park filed a complaint the same day alleging that her house was broken into on April 25 between 7 pm and 11 pm when her family was away. The perpetrators allegedly broke open the main gate and an almirah, stealing gold and silver ornaments and Rs 10,000 in cash.
Possible Common Modus Operandi
Police sources said both incidents involve forced entry and occurred during periods when the residents were not at home, suggesting a possible common modus operandi. No arrests have been made yet. Investigations are ongoing, and police have increased patrolling in the area to prevent further incidents.
