In a significant crackdown under Operation Toofan, the city police arrested two individuals for possession of synthetic drugs on Monday. The operation, aimed at curbing drug trafficking in the region, led to the apprehension of Augustine K, 36, from Mattancherry, and Sreekumar M, 46, from Thathamangalam in Chittur.
Details of the Arrest
The arrests were made during a routine vehicle check by the Panangad police near Nettoor International Market. The vehicle, owned by Augustine, was found under suspicious circumstances, prompting a thorough search. During the inspection, law enforcement officials recovered 5.46 grams of MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy) and Rs 29,500 in cash from the car.
Alleged Drug Deal
According to police reports, Augustine had traveled to Nettoor with the intention of conducting a drug transaction. Sreekumar, who was present at the scene, allegedly came to purchase narcotics from Augustine. Further investigations revealed that Augustine is already an accused in a case involving the seizure of one-and-a-half kilograms of ganja at the Muttom police station in Idukki.
Operation Toofan Intensifies
In light of these developments, security and inspection measures have been tightened across Ernakulam district as part of Operation Toofan. The accused were produced before a local court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Previous Arrests
This incident follows another arrest by the Panangad police on Sunday, when four youths were detained near the Nettoor railway track. The arrests were made in response to complaints from local residents about individuals trespassing onto private properties near the track to consume drugs.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat the drug menace in the city. Stay updated with the latest news from Kochi and surrounding areas.
