According to the Kondalampatty police, the accident occurred when an MPV, driven by Praveen Kumar, was traveling on the highway. The vehicle was carrying Ramkumar, 80, and his wife Vasantha Latha, 74, both residents of Chennai. They were returning to Chennai after attending a function at a relative's house in Kerala.

As the MPV reached the Ariyanur area near Salem, it reportedly went out of control. The vehicle first struck a scooter and then a motorcycle that were ahead of it on the road. Following the impact, the MPV overturned, leading to a chaotic scene on the busy national highway.

Casualties and Immediate Aftermath

The collision proved fatal for two individuals. Vasantha Latha, the 74-year-old passenger in the MPV, and Baskaran, 60, who was riding the scooter, died on the spot due to the severe injuries sustained in the accident.

In addition to the fatalities, two others sustained serious injuries. Ramkumar, the elderly husband of Vasantha Latha, and the driver Praveen Kumar were both critically hurt in the crash. Emergency services were promptly alerted and rushed to the scene.

Police Investigation and Medical Response

The bodies of the deceased, Vasantha Latha and Baskaran, were transported to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examinations.
