In a shocking incident of alleged mob justice, two young men were brutally killed by workers at a garage in the Tangi area of Cuttack district, Odisha, in the early hours of Wednesday. The police have confirmed the double murder and have initiated a detailed investigation.
Victims Identified, Theft Suspected as Motive
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Shoaib, aged 21, and Pratant Kumar Jena, aged 24. Both were residents within the limits of the Choudwar police station. According to preliminary police reports, the duo allegedly attempted to steal from the garage premises when they were caught by the staff on duty.
This led to a violent confrontation. Initial findings from the investigation suggest a horrifying sequence of events where the victims were stripped, tied to poles, and subjected to a brutal assault. When their bodies were recovered, they bore multiple injury marks, indicating severe physical trauma.
Police Investigation and Family's Anguish
The Cuttack Rural Superintendent of Police, Vinit Agrawal, stated that two suspects have already been detained in connection with the lynching. "We are investigating from all angles to ascertain the circumstances leading to the double murder," Agrawal said. He added that multiple police teams have been formed to arrest all individuals involved, and several suspects are currently being questioned.
While the police probe is centered around a suspected theft attempt, the families of the victims have vehemently rejected any criminal background. Shoaib's aunt, speaking to reporters, expressed confusion and grief: "I do not know why and how my nephew reached the garage. He and his friend were brutally assaulted and murdered. We demand the immediate arrest of the killers."
Authorities are also verifying the antecedents of the deceased as part of the standard procedure.
Demand for Justice and Heightened Security
The incident has sparked concern and outrage among local residents, who are demanding swift justice. In response to the tense situation, the police have stepped up security in the Tangi area to prevent any further unrest or retaliatory violence.
The case highlights the grave dangers of vigilante justice and raises serious questions about law and order. The police investigation continues to piece together the exact events of that early Wednesday morning.
