Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives of Two Toddlers in Namakkal
In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the local community, two young children of a guest worker from Odisha drowned in an unsecured sewage tank at a private spinning mill near Pallipalayam in Namakkal district on Sunday evening. The tragic event highlights severe lapses in industrial safety protocols in residential areas.
Details of the Deceased and the Incident
The deceased have been identified as Logan Kumar, aged 4, and Hari Shankar, aged 3, sons of Manoj Kumar Pradosh. The family was residing in the mill's residential quarters, where the children went to play outside their home but did not return. Their father, Manoj Kumar Pradosh, grew concerned and initiated a search, ultimately discovering their bodies in an open sewage tank opposite their residence.
In a desperate attempt to save his children, Manoj immediately entered the tank, retrieved their bodies, and rushed them to the government hospital in Pallipalayam. Despite his efforts, doctors at the hospital declared the children brought dead upon arrival, confirming the tragic outcome.
Police Investigation and Safety Lapses
Veppadai police were promptly alerted and sent the bodies to the Pallipalayam Government Hospital for a postmortem examination. A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances leading to the drowning.
Inspector P Sangeetha stated, "We will take necessary action against the dyeing unit owners based on the outcome of the investigation." Preliminary inquiries have revealed alarming safety deficiencies: the sewage tank, situated behind a dyeing unit, was placed in a residential area without basic safety measures such as fencing or a lid with a lock.
