New Delhi: Two men wanted in connection with a shootout and firing incident in Central Delhi's Karol Bagh area were arrested on Saturday in the Kamla Market locality following a brief exchange of gunfire with the police. The accused, identified as Sahil (28) and Avinash (24), both residents of Karol Bagh, were allegedly associated with the wanted criminal Vikas, also known as Kalia.
Background of the Case
The case in which they were wanted dates back to April 30, when they reportedly attacked a rival criminal named Rohit, alias Mota. Police received a tip-off about the whereabouts of Sahil and Avinash around 8:50 pm, leading to raids in the Kamla Market area. According to the police, the accused were expected to arrive from the Gandhi Market roundabout towards the Civic Center around 10 pm on a brown scooter, allegedly with the intention of eliminating Rohit.
Police Interception and Exchange of Fire
Once identified around 10:20 pm, police intercepted their vehicle. The accused allegedly opened fire at the cops, firing four rounds, police said. “A bullet fired by the accused struck the proof jacket worn by inspector Rohit Kumar on the front side,” said DCP (central) Rohit Rajbir Singh. “During a brief exchange of fire, police shot at the legs of the accused and injured them before apprehending,” added DCP Singh. Sahil was shot on his right leg, while Avinash was shot on his left leg.
Seizure of Weapons and Vehicle
During the proceedings, one pistol, one country-made katta, three live cartridges, ten empty cartridge cases, and the scooter used in the incident were seized. The scooter was found to be a stolen vehicle from Malviya Nagar. A separate case has been registered at the Kamla Market police station under sections of the BNS and Arms Act.
Criminal Background of Accused
Vikas had backed Sahil and Avinash in the firing incident, police said. Sahil was found to have three previous involvements, including robbery, at the Anand Parbat and Sarai Rohilla police stations. Avinash was also involved in a robbery case at the Sarai Rohilla police station, and both have previously served jail time.
