Udupi Sees Police Intervention as Hindu Groups Protest Christian Discourse Event
Tension gripped the coastal town of Udupi in Karnataka on Friday after members of Hindu organizations staged a protest against a religious discourse programme, resulting in the detention of 38 protesters by police authorities. The incident unfolded near the Christian PU College ground, where a court-sanctioned event titled 'Samadhana Mahotsava' is scheduled to take place from March 20 to 22.
Background of the Controversial Event
According to an official release from the Udupi district police, the 'Samadhana Mahotsava' is being organized daily from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the Christian PU College ground near Mission Compound. The event falls under the jurisdiction of the Udupi Town police station and is being conducted by the Fellowship of Udupi District Churches under the leadership of its president.
The programme has been arranged following a high court order that came in response to a writ petition. The special speaker invited for the event is Pastor Mohan C Lazarus from Tamil Nadu, whose participation has become the focal point of the controversy.
Protesters' Objections and Police Response
Leaders of Hindu Jagarana Vedike and other pro-Hindu organizations have raised objections to Pastor Lazarus's involvement in the programme. They allege that cases have been registered against him in Tamil Nadu for allegedly insulting Hindu deities. Prior to the protest, these groups had appealed to the district administration and police department through a press conference, urging them not to grant permission for the event.
On Friday around 5 PM, protesters gathered near Govinda Kalyana Mantapa under the leadership of regional functionaries of Hindu Jagarana Vedike. After addressing the media, they attempted to proceed toward the Christian PU College venue with the stated intention of reaching the programme site.
Police authorities intervened promptly to prevent the protesters from advancing further. Law enforcement personnel took a total of 38 protesters into custody as a preventive measure. All detained individuals were subsequently released after the immediate situation was brought under control.
Legal Action and Ongoing Situation
In connection with the protest incident, a criminal case has been registered against all 38 individuals at the Udupi Town police station. The charges have been filed under Section 189(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 112 of the Karnataka Police Act.
The police have maintained a heightened security presence in the area to ensure that the religious discourse programme can proceed without disruption as per the high court's directive. The situation remains tense but under control as authorities monitor developments closely.
