Ulhasnagar Tragedy: Sanitation Worker Murdered Over Garbage Dispute, Wife Dies by Suicide

In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, a sanitation worker employed for door-to-door garbage collection by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) was allegedly murdered on Monday morning following a dispute over waste disposal. The tragedy deepened hours later when his wife, upon learning of his death, died by suicide, plunging the family into unimaginable grief.

Details of the Fatal Confrontation

The deceased has been identified as Mahadu Jagtap, who worked with Konark Enviro, a private contractor appointed by the civic body for waste collection using ghanta gadi vehicles. According to police reports, the incident occurred in the Camp Number 3 area of Ulhasnagar during Jagtap's routine garbage collection duty. Officials stated that Jagtap noticed the accused, Durgesh Gupta (32), had scattered garbage outside his house instead of keeping it properly for collection. When Jagtap asked him to dispose of the waste correctly, an argument erupted between the two.

Police revealed that there had been previous disputes, with Durgesh having been warned earlier about improper garbage placement. However, on Monday morning, the confrontation escalated violently. Durgesh allegedly went inside his house, retrieved a knife, and attacked Jagtap repeatedly. Investigators reported that the accused stabbed Mahadu at least 32 times. CCTV footage from the area shows some residents attempting to intervene, but Durgesh ignored them and continued the assault. Mahadu succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Wife's Tragic Suicide and Family Background

Soon after news of the murder reached Mahadu's residence, his wife, Purvi Jagtap, reportedly became distraught and died by suicide at their home. Police disclosed that Purvi was Mahadu's second wife; he had remarried last year after the death of his first wife. The couple leaves behind two children from Mahadu's first marriage, who are now orphaned. This double tragedy has sent shockwaves through Ulhasnagar, with residents expressing profound sorrow over the loss of two lives in the same family within hours.

Police Investigation and Accused's History

Following the incident, police from the Central police station arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Officers examined CCTV footage, which helped identify Durgesh as the assailant. The accused was arrested within an hour of the crime. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Gore described Durgesh as unemployed and known for his aggressive behavior, noting that even his family members appeared troubled by his conduct. Police records indicate that Durgesh had been arrested in June last year in connection with an assault case but was later released on bail.

Community Reaction and Sanitation Workers' Strike

The incident has deeply saddened sanitation workers in Ulhasnagar, many of whom are demanding strict action against the accused. In protest against the crime, some sanitation workers have declared a strike on Tuesday in the city. The tragedy highlights the risks faced by frontline workers and has sparked conversations about safety and respect for those in essential services. As the community mourns, authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
