UP Police Chief Issues Directives to Enhance Law and Order Measures
In a significant move to bolster law enforcement efficiency, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna on Tuesday issued comprehensive directives to senior police officers across the state. The instructions focused on three critical areas: strengthening preventive policing mechanisms, ensuring faster completion of criminal investigations, and intensifying action against narcotics trafficking networks.
Statewide Review Meeting Conducted via Video Conference
The DGP conducted a thorough review of the law-and-order situation during a high-level meeting at the police headquarters. The session, held through video conferencing, saw participation from all zonal additional directors general, police commissioners, range inspectors general, and deputy inspectors general. Senior superintendents of police and superintendents of police from various UP districts also attended the crucial gathering.
Remarkable Reduction in Public Grievances Across Districts
A major highlight of the review was the substantial decline in public grievances reported across Uttar Pradesh. DGP Krishna attributed this positive development to continuous monitoring systems, enhanced accountability at the district level, and improved quality of grievance redressal mechanisms at police stations.
According to the detailed review presented during the meeting:
- Sambhal, Firozabad, and Etawah districts recorded an impressive nearly 70% decline in public complaints
- Fifteen other districts reported a reduction exceeding 40% in registered grievances
- Forty-eight districts registered a decline of over 30% in public complaints
The DGP specifically asked officers from Sambhal, Firozabad, and Etawah districts to submit detailed reports outlining the strategies implemented in their jurisdictions. These successful practices will be studied for potential replication across other districts in Uttar Pradesh.
Emphasis on Preventive Policing and Early Intervention
DGP Krishna emphasized that preventive policing measures must be significantly strengthened, particularly before the formal registration of First Information Reports (FIRs). He stressed that early intervention in local disputes and conflicts can prevent them from escalating into serious criminal incidents, thereby reducing the overall crime burden on the police system.
Push for Faster and Higher Quality Criminal Investigations
The meeting placed special focus on improving both the quality and speed of criminal investigations throughout the state. DGP Krishna noted that Uttar Pradesh currently ranks third on the Centralised Ranking and NCL Dashboard, and directed officers to intensify their efforts to secure the top position in these national rankings.
He issued specific instructions regarding investigation timelines, directing officers to strictly follow provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. According to these guidelines:
- General criminal investigations should ideally be completed within 60 days
- Investigations in serious crimes must be concluded within 90 days
Review of Road Safety Initiatives and Accident Reduction
The DGP also conducted a detailed review of the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) campaign, a major road safety initiative aimed at reducing accident deaths across Uttar Pradesh by 40%. The review revealed significant progress in several districts:
- Shravasti district recorded an extraordinary 83% reduction in road accidents
- The rural zone of the Ghaziabad commissionerate reported a substantial 53% decline in accident cases
These directives and reviews form part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance public safety, improve police responsiveness, and strengthen law enforcement effectiveness across India's most populous state.
