A devastating collision between a van and a truck on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district resulted in the death of three individuals, including a minor boy, and left four others injured. The fatal crash occurred on Thursday under conditions of severely reduced visibility caused by dense fog.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The accident took place near pillar number 254 on the Purvanchal Expressway, within the jurisdiction of the Mubarakpur police station. According to officials, a van traveling from Meerut to Varanasi collided with a truck. Azamgarh's Circle Officer (Sadar), Astha Jaiswal, confirmed that all seven occupants of the van were residents of Alipur in the Sardhana area of Meerut district.
She stated that the group was en route to Varanasi when the tragedy struck. Three of the seven passengers died on the spot, while the remaining four sustained injuries and were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were sent for a post-mortem examination.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The police have identified two of the deceased. They are Vishesh, aged 40, and his 10-year-old son, Prince. The identity of the third victim could not be immediately ascertained. Among the injured are Vishesh's wife, Dolly (32), his daughter Anshika, his 12-year-old son Kartik, and the driver of the van. Officials reported that Kartik's condition was noted to be serious following the accident.
Upon receiving information about the incident, senior police officials, including ASP (City) Madhuban Kumar Singh and CO (Sadar) Astha Jaiswal, rushed to the spot. The chief medical officer was personally monitoring the medical team providing care to the injured victims.
Poor Visibility Blamed for the Accident
Authorities have cited very poor visibility due to dense fog as the primary cause of the collision on the high-speed expressway. The hazardous weather conditions, common in North India during the winter months, significantly increase the risk of such accidents on highways.
This tragic event underscores the critical need for extreme caution while driving during foggy conditions. It serves as a somber reminder for motorists to reduce speed, use fog lights, and maintain a safe distance to prevent similar heartbreak on the roads.
