In a significant enforcement action, Cantt police in Varanasi conducted a late-night raid on Sunday that revealed a substantial cache of commercial LPG cylinders being illegally stored. The operation took place behind a closed petrol pump in the Ghausabad Chowkaghat area, where authorities discovered at least 200 filled commercial cylinders that were improperly stocked.
Police Investigation Uncovers Agency Connection
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Apoorv Pandey of Cantt confirmed that preliminary investigations established the cylinders originated from Sunrise Gas Agency, which operates from Adalhat in Mirzapur. The police immediately notified officials from the civil supply department upon making the discovery, and further investigation is currently underway to determine the full scope of the illegal operation.
The raid was initiated around 10 pm after Cantt police received credible intelligence about large-scale cylinder stocking in a residential building situated behind a closed petrol pump in the Chaukaghat locality. When officers conducted the surprise inspection, they encountered the substantial stockpile of commercial cylinders that appeared to be part of an unauthorized distribution network.
Civil Supply Department Launches Parallel Probe
District Supply Officer Krishna Ballabh Singh addressed the situation on Monday, revealing that officials from the relevant petroleum company have been directed to collect comprehensive details from the gas agency. The primary question under investigation is why these commercial cylinders were transported to Varanasi instead of being properly stored in the agency's designated godown facility in Mirzapur.
Singh emphasized that appropriate action against both the distributor and any individuals involved in hoarding activities will be determined once all necessary information has been gathered through the ongoing investigation. The civil supply department is working in coordination with law enforcement to ensure regulatory compliance and prevent market manipulation.
Illegal Supply Network Targeting Hospitality Sector
Initial investigative findings suggest that the illegally stored cylinders were being supplied to hotels and restaurants across Varanasi at significantly inflated prices. This unauthorized distribution network appears to have been exploiting commercial establishments that rely on LPG for their operations, potentially creating artificial scarcity and driving up costs for legitimate consumers.
