VIB Arrests Clerk, Accomplice in Rs 40,000 Bribe Trap in Purnia

Vigilance Bureau Nabs Revenue Clerk and Accomplice in Rs 40,000 Bribery Sting

In a significant crackdown on corruption, a headquarters team from the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) executed a successful trap operation on Friday, leading to the arrest of a revenue employee and his alleged accomplice in Purnia. The duo was apprehended while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 within the record room of the Purnia east circle office.

Details of the Bribery Case and Arrest

The accused, identified as Lal Babu Rajak, was stationed at the Purnia east circle office. He is alleged to have demanded a bribe from a complainant to expedite an inquiry and submit a report concerning a land-related matter. Following a formal complaint, the VIB conducted a thorough verification process, uncovering substantial evidence of the illicit demand. Consequently, a case was officially registered on April 16.

A specialized raid team, under the leadership of VIB DSP Amarendra Prasad Vidyarthi, meticulously laid a trap. During the operation, Rajak was caught red-handed alongside a woman accomplice, named Rumi Kundu, who resides in Kaptanpara under the Sadar police station area in Purnia. The arrest occurred precisely as they were accepting the bribe amount on the office premises.

Legal Proceedings and Broader Anti-Corruption Efforts

Both individuals are currently undergoing intensive questioning by authorities. They are scheduled to be presented before the Special Vigilance Court located in Bhagalpur for further legal action. Investigations into this case are actively ongoing to uncover any additional details or connections.

This incident represents the VIB's 40th trap operation conducted so far in the year 2026. Overall, the bureau has registered a total of 45 corruption cases during this period. Among these, 37 accused persons have been apprehended in the act of accepting bribes, with a substantial sum of Rs 12.81 lakh recovered as illicit bribe money.

In a related development, the VIB's sustained legal efforts have yielded further results. Throughout February and March, 13 absconding accused individuals involved in separate corruption cases surrendered before special courts. These cases are primarily linked to the misuse of official positions and various trap operations, spanning multiple districts including Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur.

The VIB continues to reinforce its commitment to eradicating corruption through rigorous enforcement and legal strategies, aiming to uphold integrity within public offices across the region.
