Monsoon Strengthens: Alerts in Kerala, Odisha; Mumbai Air Traffic Hit

Monsoon Intensifies with Heavy Rainfall in Multiple States

The monsoon has strengthened significantly across India, prompting weather alerts in Kerala and Odisha, while Mumbai's air traffic faced disruptions due to torrential rains. Several areas in Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, with some locations receiving as much as 300 mm, according to official data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Mumbai: Flooding and Flight Disruptions

In Mumbai, the heavy downpour led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls and delays. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport reported disruptions in flight operations, with several flights delayed or diverted. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. According to a senior IMD official, “The city may receive more than 200 mm of rain in a single day, which could lead to severe flooding.”

Kerala and Odisha on High Alert

Kerala has been placed under an orange alert, with predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts. The state government has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. In Odisha, an orange alert has been issued for coastal districts, with the IMD forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions.

Impact on Other Regions

The monsoon has also affected other parts of the country. In Maharashtra, besides Mumbai, districts like Thane and Palghar have reported significant rainfall. The IMD has predicted that the monsoon trough will remain active, bringing widespread precipitation to central and western India over the next few days. In the northeastern states, Assam and Meghalaya are under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, which may trigger landslides in hilly areas.

Precautionary Measures and Advisories

Authorities in affected states have deployed disaster response teams and set up relief camps. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been placed on standby in Kerala and Odisha. The Mumbai civic body has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid waterlogged areas. The IMD continues to issue real-time updates and urges the public to follow official warnings.
