Vijayawada Police's Anti-Drug Campaign Shows Early Success with 50 Positive Cases
The anti-drugs drive known as Drugs Pai Dandayatra 2.0, launched by the Vijayawada city police, is already demonstrating significant results. Within the first three days of its implementation, approximately 50 individuals have tested positive for drug use, highlighting the urgency and effectiveness of this initiative.
Targeted Operations in High-Risk Zones
This special campaign is specifically designed to curb substance abuse among the youth and is being conducted across identified high-risk zones throughout the city. Police teams are utilizing on-the-spot drug detection tests with medical kits, focusing particularly on suspected hotspots where drug activity is prevalent.
Those who test positive undergo further evaluation to assess the nature and severity of their addiction. Subsequently, they are transferred to de-addiction centres for comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programs.
Recent Operation at City Bus Terminal
As part of the ongoing efforts, a recent operation at the Vijayawada city bus terminal, under the jurisdiction of the Krishna Lanka police, screened 64 individuals. Out of these, six were identified as drug users, underscoring the targeted approach of the drive. Senior officials, including Police Commissioner S V Rajasekhara Babu and DCP Krishna Kant Patel, closely monitored the operation to ensure its smooth execution.
Commitment to a Drug-Free City
Police Commissioner Rajasekhara Babu emphasized the department's dedication to making Vijayawada a drug-free city. He stated, "We are committed to making Vijayawada a drug-free city. During our earlier 35-day campaign, nearly three lakh people took a digital pledge against drugs. Now, under this special drive, we have identified 149 hotspots where intensive checks are being conducted daily. Around 300 to 400 suspects will be tested every day. Those who voluntarily come forward and test positive will be rehabilitated."
He further detailed that special teams, comprising both police and health officials, are conducting surprise checks using a dedicated mobile unit. Additionally, surveillance measures are being enhanced with the strengthening of CCTV and drone monitoring across the city.
Stricter Actions and Future Plans
Authorities have revealed that stricter actions are being taken against drug peddlers, with cases being booked under the NDPS Act and more proposals in the pipeline. Looking ahead, officials have announced plans for Drugs Pai Dandayatra 3.0, indicating that the fight against drugs will only intensify in the coming months. This sustained effort aims to create a safer environment and reduce drug-related incidents in Vijayawada.
