Vizag Police Crack Down on Illegal Cricket Betting Ring Operating Through Social Media

In a significant crackdown on cyber-enabled illegal activities, the Visakhapatnam (Vizag) police have arrested two brothers for allegedly orchestrating and promoting a large-scale illegal online cricket betting operation through popular social media platforms. The duo is accused of specifically targeting the youth demographic with enticing promises of quick and easy financial gains through their illicit betting schemes.

Brothers Identified as Basketball Coach and Accomplice

The arrested individuals have been identified as Vana Sai Ganesh, aged 25, who worked as a basketball coach at a private college in Vizag, and his brother Vana Anil Kumar, aged 29. Both were residents of the Madhurawada locality in the city. Their arrest follows a detailed investigation triggered by a formal complaint from a young victim who suffered substantial financial losses.

How the Illegal Betting Operation Was Uncovered

The case came to light when a young man from Vizag encountered an advertisement on Instagram under the guise of "cricket predictions." Intrigued by the prospect, he followed a provided link to join a Telegram channel. This channel, along with others named "AK Cricket Predictions" and "SS Cricket Predictions," regularly shared what appeared to be insider tips and predictions related to ongoing cricket matches.

Through these channels, the operators aggressively promoted several betting websites, including:

  • STAKE888.COM
  • LOTUS.STAKE888.COM
  • Diam247x.com

Trusting the social media promotions, the victim participated in cricket betting on these platforms, expecting significant returns. However, he ended up losing over Rs 12.5 lakh in the process. Realizing he had been defrauded, he promptly filed a formal complaint with the Cybercrimes Police Station in Vizag, seeking legal action against the perpetrators for promoting illegal activities.

Investigation Reveals Systematic Promotion for Commissions

The subsequent police investigation uncovered that Sai Ganesh and Anil Kumar had been actively promoting these illegal cricket betting activities through the Telegram app. Their modus operandi involved luring unsuspecting individuals with the allure of easy money, operating primarily to earn commissions from the betting platforms they endorsed. The police have confirmed that their promotional activities were extensive and specifically designed to exploit the interest in cricket among the youth.

Legal Action and Seizure of Evidence

Acting on the evidence gathered, the Vizag police apprehended the two brothers under relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the Andhra Pradesh Gaming (Amendment) Act, 2025. During the arrest, authorities seized multiple mobile phones used in the operation. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to uncover the full extent of the network and identify any additional accomplices or beneficiaries.

Police Issue Stern Warning Against Cricket Betting

In the wake of this arrest, the Vizag police have issued a strong and unequivocal warning to the public regarding the perils of engaging in illegal cricket betting. Authorities emphasized that stringent legal action will be taken against all individuals involved—whether they are organizers, promoters, or active participants in such illicit schemes. The police reiterated their commitment to cracking down on cybercrimes and protecting citizens from financial fraud perpetrated through digital platforms.

This case highlights the growing trend of illegal betting operations migrating to social media and messaging apps, exploiting their reach and anonymity. It serves as a critical reminder for the public, especially young internet users, to exercise extreme caution and verify the legitimacy of online financial opportunities, particularly those involving sports betting.
