Woman Strangled, Body Hung from Tree to Fake Suicide in MP's Anuppur
In a shocking incident in Madhya Pradesh's Anuppur district, a 25-year-old woman was strangled to death, and her body was subsequently hanged from a tree in a forest area to pass it off as a suicide. The decomposed body was discovered near the Mathdeura temple under the jurisdiction of the Chachai police station on March 25, after a local resident alerted the authorities.
Discovery and Initial Investigation
Upon receiving the alert, police officials rushed to the scene and conducted a panchnama, a formal documentation of evidence, in the presence of the woman's family members. The body was then sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The autopsy report provided a critical breakthrough, confirming that the woman died due to strangulation, thereby ruling out death by hanging. This finding immediately shifted the investigation from a suspected suicide to a homicide case, prompting a deeper probe into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Background and Relationship Details
During the investigation, statements from the woman's family members revealed that she had been in a relationship with a man following the death of her husband. Police identified the accused as Satendra Gupta, also known as Sangam, a 27-year-old resident of Rampur. According to authorities, Gupta frequently met the woman and often took her along in his vehicle, indicating a close association between the two.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Crime
Police reconstructed the events based on their investigation. On March 9, the accused allegedly called the woman to meet him on Bakho road. He then took her on a motorcycle to a secluded forest area. During their meeting, an argument erupted when the woman reportedly insisted that Gupta accept her as his wife.
In a fit of rage, Gupta is accused of strangling the woman with her own dupatta. To conceal the crime and mislead investigators, he later hanged her body from a tree to make it appear as a suicide before fleeing the scene.
Legal Action and Arrest
A case was registered on March 29 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code. Following intensive investigation, police arrested the accused, Satendra Gupta. He was produced before a court in Anuppur, which subsequently sent him to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings.
