A 26-year-old man was seriously injured after being shot multiple times during a late-night altercation near Barrier Chowk in Banur, Punjab. The incident occurred around midnight when a group of youths standing near a shop got into an argument with occupants of a Mahindra Scorpio, which escalated into gunfire.
Victim Identified as Jaspreet Singh
The injured man, Jaspreet Singh, also known as “Kali,” is a resident of Ward No. 3 in Banur. He was returning home from his job at a well-known tailor shop in Zirakpur, accompanied by two friends. The group stopped at Barrier Chowk to purchase food items when the confrontation took place.
According to eyewitnesses, several men arrived in an SUV and an argument broke out. During the confrontation, one of the SUV occupants allegedly pulled out a pistol and opened fire at Jaspreet. Panic spread immediately, with shopkeepers and customers fleeing the area. The attackers fired multiple rounds before escaping.
Victim Rushed to GMCH-32
Jaspreet sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 (GMCH-32), Chandigarh, by passersby and his companions. He remains in critical condition. Banur Station House Officer (SHO) Arshdeep Sharma confirmed that the accused have been identified and a case has been registered. The exact number of bullets that struck the victim will be confirmed after receiving the medical report.
Police Suspect Old Enmity
SHO Sharma stated that the incident appears to be linked to an old personal enmity. “We have identified the accused and are taking further action. The motive seems to be a previous dispute,” he said. The police are investigating the case and have launched a search for the suspects.
The attack has raised concerns about public safety in Banur, with residents demanding stricter policing. The area near Barrier Chowk is a busy commercial spot, and the shooting has left locals shaken. Authorities have assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
