A 28-year-old resident doctor was attacked by a group of youths while on duty at the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) Hospital in Bidar during the early hours of Friday. The police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the incident.
Arrests Made in Connection with the Attack
The arrested individuals have been identified as Aditya Gummala (21) and Balaji Gummala (23) from Tajalapur village; Vinod Koli (26) and Pawan Koli (25) from Chambol village; Govind Chouhan (28) and Mahadev Chouhan (23) from Benakanalli; and Anil Kachave (25) from Latur, Maharashtra.
Sequence of Events
According to reports, a youth from Benakanalli village was brought to BRIMS Hospital around 1 am on Friday after sustaining injuries from a bike fall. The injured youth allegedly demanded treatment without registering a medico-legal case (MLC).
Dr. Tukaram, a first-year postgraduate student at BRIMS who was on duty at the time, provided primary treatment and sent the patient for scanning. Speaking to the Times of India, Dr. Tukaram stated, 'A group of young men who were under the influence of alcohol attacked me, asking, Why did I do MLC? Other staff present at the hospital came to help me, but they pushed them and assaulted me.'
Doctor's Condition and Legal Action
The injured doctor is currently receiving treatment in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) of BRIMS Hospital. A case has been registered at the New Town police station, and investigations are ongoing.
Protests and Demands
Doctors and medical students staged a protest in front of BRIMS Hospital on Friday, condemning the attack on their colleague. They demanded strict legal action against the accused and called for enhanced security measures, including the deployment of more security personnel at the hospital.
