Shimla: State BJP president Rajeev Bindal on Friday accused the Congress government of attempting to "hijack" the municipal and panchayati raj elections in Himachal Pradesh. Bindal claimed that the Congress was rattled by the BJP's strong performance in the recent municipal elections and was now trying to alter the election rules to influence the outcome of the chairperson and vice-chairperson polls.
Allegations of Rule Manipulation
He termed the move to introduce new rules and notifications during the ongoing election process as an attack on democracy and the Constitution. Bindal alleged that the state government was using fear, intimidation, and money power to influence elected representatives and secure votes in its favour.
Misuse of Government Machinery
The state BJP chief further accused the Congress of misusing government machinery to retain power and weaken democratic institutions. He warned that the BJP would launch protests from the streets to the assembly if any attempt was made to tamper with the electoral mandate.
Bindal emphasized that the BJP would not remain silent and would take all necessary steps to protect the democratic process. He called upon the Election Commission to intervene and ensure free and fair elections in the state.
