In a brazen act of criminal intimidation, unidentified youths opened fire at the residence of a trader in Amritsar late on Wednesday night, allegedly in connection with an extortion demand. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local business community and prompted a swift response from law enforcement agencies.
Incident Details
The attack took place around 11:30 PM at the home of Rajesh Kumar, a prominent cloth merchant, located in the Ranjit Avenue area. According to police reports, two motorcycle-borne assailants fired at least four rounds at the main gate and windows of the house before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack as the family members were inside the house at the time.
Extortion Threat
Rajesh Kumar told the police that he had been receiving extortion calls for the past week from an unknown number demanding Rs 10 lakh. The caller threatened dire consequences if the money was not paid. Kumar had reportedly informed the local police about the threats, but no immediate action was taken.
Police Response
Upon receiving the information, a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gurpreet Singh reached the spot and cordoned off the area. Forensic experts were called in to collect evidence, including bullet shells and CCTV footage from nearby cameras. The DSP stated that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. He also assured that the culprits would be arrested soon.

The incident has created a sense of fear among traders in Amritsar. Many have demanded better security and a crackdown on extortion rackets.
