A devastating road accident in Jammu's Udhampur district on Monday morning resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 21 passengers and left 51 others injured. The horrific incident occurred when a bus traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur town skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the hilly Khagote area around 10 am.

Preliminary Investigation Points to Multiple Possible Causes

Rescue Operation and Medical Response

The bus reportedly rolled down the gorge and landed upside down on a road below, crushing an auto-rickshaw whose occupants also sustained injuries. An Army convoy passing by the area immediately stopped after noticing the accident, with personnel leading initial rescue efforts before Jammu and Kashmir police and local residents joined in to assist.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to shift injured passengers to nearby medical facilities. Many of the critically injured were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Udhampur town, while others were transported to Jammu for specialized treatment.

Officials confirmed that 19 passengers died at the accident scene, while two critically injured individuals succumbed to their injuries at Udhampur District Hospital despite medical efforts.

National and State Leaders Express Grief and Announce Compensation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of lives, posting on social media platform X: "Pained to hear about the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Udhampur. I extend my heartfelt condolences. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured."

The Prime Minister announced ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of deceased passengers and Rs 50,000 each for critically injured individuals.

President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families, expressing solidarity during this difficult time.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced immediate relief measures, stating through his office: "While no amount of assistance can ever make up for the irreparable loss of lives, as an immediate succour, the CM has announced immediate relief of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each deceased, Rs 1 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries."

Additional Official Responses and Regional Road Safety Concerns

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha described the accident as "heartbreaking" and assured all possible assistance to affected families. Union Minister and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh vowed comprehensive help, confirming he had spoken with local authorities to coordinate relief efforts.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in Jammu's hilly regions, particularly in forested areas of Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban. These regions have witnessed numerous fatal accidents over the years due to dangerous combinations of steep gradients, narrow carriageways, blind curves, seasonal road deterioration, and heavy traffic.
