At least seven people have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh as heavy rains lashed the state, causing widespread flooding and disruption. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several western districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Deaths and damage reported
According to official reports, the fatalities occurred in separate rain-related incidents across the state. In Lucknow, two persons died when a wall collapsed, while in Kanpur, one person was electrocuted. Other deaths were reported from Unnao, Hardoi, and Sitapur districts. Rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected residents.
The heavy downpour has also led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and normal life. Several rivers, including the Yamuna and Ganga, are flowing above the danger mark in some stretches, prompting authorities to evacuate people from vulnerable zones.
IMD issues red alert
The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in western Uttar Pradesh districts such as Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, and Moradabad. A red alert signifies that immediate action is required to prevent loss of life and property. The weather office has also warned of possible flash floods and landslides in the region.
"We are closely monitoring the situation and have advised district administrations to take necessary precautions," said an IMD official. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and people are urged to stay indoors unless necessary.
Impact on daily life
The incessant rains have thrown normal life out of gear in many parts of the state. Schools and colleges in several districts have been closed as a precautionary measure. Train services on some routes have been affected due to waterlogging on tracks, and several flights from Lucknow airport have been delayed.
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure speedy relief and rescue operations. "All district magistrates have been instructed to remain on high alert and deploy NDRF teams if needed," a government spokesperson said.
Forecast for next few days
The IMD has predicted that the heavy rain spell will continue over the next two to three days, with a gradual reduction in intensity from July 12. The weather office has also warned of strong winds accompanying the rains, which could cause further damage to infrastructure.
Residents in affected areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from dilapidated structures. The state government has set up control rooms in all districts to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
