AAP stages Punjab protests after minister Arora's ED arrest

A day after Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and taken to Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday launched statewide protests against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government. The party accused the central government of “weaponising and misusing central agencies to intimidate opposition and destabilise non-BJP governments”.

Protests and Clashes

AAP workers held demonstrations and gheraoed BJP offices at district headquarters across Punjab, raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government. At a few places, both sides nearly came to blows. In Ludhiana, AAP and BJP workers shoved each other outside the local BJP office. In Nawanshahr’s Balachaur, there was a tense face-off between AAP workers led by Banga MLA Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi and BJP district chief Rajwinder Lucky.

Demand for FIR

Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma demanded an FIR against Sukhi over alleged ‘unruly behaviour’. The protests are expected to continue in the coming days as AAP seeks to maintain pressure on the central government over what it terms as political vendetta.
