Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit officially took over as the Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on July 1, 2026, succeeding Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, who superannuated. The appointment positions Dixit as the senior-most officer in line to become the next IAF Chief when the present Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, retires in October 2026.
Extensive Flying Experience and Key Operations
Air Marshal Dixit, a fighter pilot with more than 3,500 hours of flying experience, was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF in December 1986. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Bangladesh, and the National Defence College. His career includes active involvement in major operations such as Operation Safed Sagar during the 1999 Kargil conflict and Operation Sindoor in 2025. According to official records, he has flown a wide range of aircraft, including the Mirage 2000, MiG series jets, Jaguar, Tejas, Hawk, as well as transport aircraft like the AN-32 and Avro, and mid-air refuellers.
Leadership Roles and Tri-Service Integration
Prior to his current role, Air Marshal Dixit served as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC), a tri-services organisation under the Chief of Defence Staff. In that capacity, he played a pivotal role in fostering jointness and setting up theatre commands across the Indian Armed Forces. Multiple joint doctrines were released during his tenure, and various initiatives were conceived to strengthen defence capabilities across all domains. He has also commanded a frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector, a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector, and the Central Air Command. Additionally, he served as a Directing Staff at the Air Force Test Pilots School and is both an Experimental Test Pilot and a Qualified Flying Instructor.
Impact on IAF Leadership
Air Marshal Dixit's elevation comes at a critical time as the IAF prepares for a leadership transition later this year. His extensive experience in operations, training, and tri-service integration is expected to provide continuity and strategic direction. The IAF has not yet announced a successor for the Vice Chief position after Dixit's likely elevation to Chief. Defence analysts note that his background in joint operations will be instrumental in advancing the theatre command structure.
