Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav met West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on Wednesday, following the TMC's disappointing performance in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. The meeting, which took place amid political realignments, saw Yadav being received by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at the entrance.
Meeting Amid Political Shifts
The visit comes at a time when the TMC, which has been in power in West Bengal for over a decade, suffered significant electoral setbacks in the 2026 assembly polls. While the party managed to retain power, its seat count dropped considerably, leading to speculation about potential alliances and strategic recalibrations ahead of future electoral battles. Akhilesh Yadav, whose SP is a key player in Uttar Pradesh politics, is seen as a potential ally for opposition unity against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level.
Discussions on Opposition Unity
Sources indicate that the meeting between the two leaders focused on opposition unity and the way forward for non-BJP parties. With the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal concluding, both leaders are believed to have discussed the possibility of forging a broader coalition to challenge the BJP in upcoming state elections and the 2029 general elections. The TMC and SP have previously collaborated in the opposition bloc, and this meeting is seen as a step towards strengthening that alliance.
The timing of the meeting is crucial, as several opposition parties are exploring ways to consolidate their ranks. Akhilesh Yadav's visit to Kolkata underscores the SP's intent to maintain ties with regional heavyweights like the TMC, despite ideological and regional differences.
Political analysts view this development as a signal that opposition parties are actively working towards a united front, even as they grapple with their own electoral performances. The TMC's setback in West Bengal has prompted introspection within the party, while the SP, which has a strong base in Uttar Pradesh, seeks to expand its influence beyond its home state.
No official statements were issued after the meeting, but both leaders are expected to hold further consultations in the coming weeks.
