Akhilesh Yadav Draws Parallel Between Meerut Traders' Agitation and 1857 Uprising
In a powerful address from Lucknow, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Monday extended his support to the protesting traders of Meerut, framing their indefinite agitation as a modern-day economic freedom movement reminiscent of the historic 1857 uprising against colonial rule.
Traders' Protest Against Supreme Court Sealing Order
Hundreds of traders and their families in Meerut's Central Market have launched an indefinite protest following a Supreme Court order that has led to the sealing of 859 residential properties. The court's directive comes as most of these properties are being utilized for commercial purposes, a situation that has severely disrupted business operations across the area, throwing local commerce into disarray.
Yadav's Scathing Critique of BJP Policies
Striking a resonant chord with the aggrieved business community, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister accused the ruling BJP government of systematically targeting various economic sectors. "The BJP had earlier attempted to hit the farmers through land acquisition and the controversial farm laws," Yadav asserted. "Now, they are targeting trade and business at the behest of multinational corporations and industrialists who provide substantial donations to the BJP."
Yadav elaborated that the BJP's apparent agenda is to concentrate economic control in the hands of a select few capitalists, thereby marginalizing traditional traders and small business owners who have long been the backbone of India's commercial landscape.
Call for Unity Among Business Community
"Every trader, shopkeeper, factory owner, and small and medium business proprietor has now seen through the BJP's designs," Yadav declared. "They are no longer willing to be misled and are uniting against the BJP's policies, which appear more aligned with corporate interests than with the welfare of the small and medium enterprises that form the foundation of a self-reliant Indian economy."
Historical Parallels and Economic Independence
In his most dramatic comparison, Yadav suggested that the government's actions represent more than mere administrative measures. "The bulldozers are not just demolishing shops and houses; they are trampling upon India's economic independence," he claimed. Characterizing the government's approach as an attempt to drag traders into economic slavery, Yadav invoked Meerut's historical significance.
"Meerut has not forgotten its pivotal role in the 1857 uprising," he reminded his audience. "This protest could mark the beginning of the BJP's decisive political decline, just as that uprising signaled the start of the end for imperial rule."
The SP president concluded with a rallying cry, predicting that "the traders of Meerut will rise against the imperialist BJP government and their cronies," framing the current protest as both an economic struggle and a political watershed moment for Uttar Pradesh and the nation.
