NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday created a striking political analogy, suggesting there exists a "fierce contest" between the declining value of the Indian rupee and the deteriorating public image of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His pointed remarks followed significant currency market volatility linked to geopolitical tensions involving Iran.
Currency Fluctuations and Political Commentary
The Indian rupee experienced notable turbulence in trading sessions, briefly crossing the psychological threshold of 95 against the US dollar during intra-day trading before settling at 94.70. This currency movement occurred against the backdrop of heightened global uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict, which has created ripple effects across international financial markets.
"In the race to fall lower, there's a fierce contest underway between the rupee and the BJP's image," Yadav declared in a social media post on platform X, originally composed in Hindi. The opposition leader elaborated on his comparison by alleging that the BJP's standing continues to diminish as more instances of alleged misconduct involving party members surface publicly.

Yadav specifically claimed that "as the misdeeds, scandals and corruption of BJP members are being increasingly exposed, the BJP's image keeps plummeting further." He expressed particular concern about what he characterized as insufficient accountability measures within the ruling party, noting that despite numerous revelations about BJP affiliates, resignations remain conspicuously absent.
The Samajwadi Party leader went further in his criticism, asserting that the BJP had reached what he described as "the absolute peak of moral bankruptcy." "People are suffering due to rising prices. The government's repeated mistakes have added to their hardships," Shivakumar stated during the media interaction. "The challenges arising from the war have further strained ordinary citizens."

The Congress leaders detailed several specific concerns affecting daily life, including shortages in essential commodities and rising energy costs. Shivakumar pointed to disruptions in gas supply chains, difficulties faced by hospitality businesses in obtaining cooking cylinders, and increasing unreliability of electricity provision in some regions.
"Gas supply is scarce, hotels are struggling to get cylinders, and even electricity has become unreliable," he explained. "Firewood is increasingly difficult to obtain, and cylinder prices have gone up by ₹60. Yet, whenever we take measures to help, we are met with criticism."
