West Bengal CM Announcement Live Updates
The process for the formation of a Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal has officially begun. The outgoing assembly is set to be dissolved soon, and newly elected BJP MLAs are likely to endorse the party's chief ministerial pick before May 9. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, credited with scripting the party's landslide victory, is expected to preside over the meeting of MLAs. Indications suggest that Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee in her home turf of Bhabanipur, has emerged as the frontrunner for the top post. Sources also indicate that the party is considering appointing a deputy chief minister.
Timeline and Key Events
The governor may shortly announce the dissolution of the state assembly, whose five-year term ends on Friday. Dissolution of the House will bring an end to Mamata Banerjee's tenure regardless of whether she steps down. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya stated in Kolkata that the swearing-in ceremony may be held on May 9, which coincides with Panchishe Boishakh — the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore — at the city's iconic Maidan. The choice of date aligns with the party's emphasis on integrating itself with West Bengal's cultural traditions.
Mamata Banerjee's Response
Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday refused to resign as Bengal chief minister, asserting that she does not recognize the election outcome and claiming a “moral victory” for her party. “I was on the streets, I will be on the streets. I won’t leave the battlefield,” she said. Addressing her first press conference after the BJP's landslide win, the outgoing CM alleged “large-scale manipulation” of the electoral process, claiming it had been rigged by the Election Commission of India, the Prime Minister, and the Union Home Minister to ensure the All India Trinamool Congress's defeat. The TMC secured 80 seats in the 294-member assembly, while the BJP's tally stood at 207.
Constitutional Process
The constitutional position is clear on a chief minister refusing to step down after an electoral defeat. Once the polls are concluded and the Election Commission of India issues certificates to elected MLAs, the outgoing House effectively ceases, and a new one must be constituted. The governor then invites the leader of the largest party or alliance to form the government and appoints a new chief minister.
Frontrunner for CM Post
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been named the central observer for the meeting of the party's newly elected MLAs, with Mohan Charan Majhi as co-observer. Within the party, many view Suvendu Adhikari as the leading contender to be elected legislative party leader and, consequently, the next chief minister. Adhikari defeated outgoing CM Mamata Banerjee in Bhowanipore, a significant victory that has bolstered his candidacy.
