Assembly Elections 2026: EC Orders Transfer of Officials in Kerala Ahead of Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated a significant reshuffle of officials in Kerala, including IAS and IPS officers, as part of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. In a directive to the state's Chief Secretary, the poll body mandated immediate transfers and postings, with compliance reports due by March 18. Key appointments include Narayanan as district police chief of Kozhikode and Inbasekhar as District Collector-cum-District Election Officer for Alappuzha. Transferred officials are barred from election duties until the poll process concludes.

State-wise Election Battles and Polling Schedules

The 2026 Assembly elections are poised for intense contests across five regions: West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Polling will be conducted in phases, with West Bengal and Assam expected to have multi-phase voting due to large electorates, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry are likely to see single-phase elections.

  • West Bengal: Polling in two phases starting April 23, featuring a high-voltage contest between Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Approximately 60 lakh 'doubtful' voter cases are under judicial review, and returning officers have been appointed for all 294 seats.
  • Assam: Voting on April 9 across 126 seats, with the BJP facing challenges from Congress and regional parties. Multi-phase polling and significant central force deployment are anticipated.
  • Tamil Nadu: Polls on April 23 for 234 seats, with a three-way fight involving the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine, and Vijay's TVK. Single-phase election expected as campaigns intensify.
  • Kerala: Direct contest between the LDF and UDF on April 9 for 140 seats, with the BJP aiming to expand its presence. Single-phase voting with close monitoring.
  • Puducherry: Voting on April 9 for all 30 seats, with a tight contest between local alliances. Single-phase poll managed through central and state forces.

Security and Logistical Arrangements

To ensure smooth and secure polling, the Election Commission plans to deploy over 1,500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), totaling more than 1.4 lakh personnel. This deployment will be supplemented by state police forces and special observers overseeing preparedness and randomisation processes. Advanced deployment of central forces is already underway in West Bengal, Assam, and other poll-bound regions to manage logistics, regulate voter movement, and maintain law and order.

In West Bengal, the Commission is adjudicating around 60 lakh 'doubtful' voter cases under judicial supervision, with supplementary electoral rolls to be published after approvals. Returning officers have been appointed for all constituencies, and the state may see multi-phase polling similar to the 2021 elections, which were held in eight phases.

Political Developments and Candidate Announcements

Key political developments include the BJP's first list of 144 candidates in West Bengal, with former MP Dilip Ghosh contesting from Kharagpur Sadar. In Assam, UPPL chief Pramod Boro will contest from Tamulpur, while in Tamil Nadu, BJP president Nainar Nagendran accused the DMK of misleading the public and practicing dynastic politics. Puducherry has nearly 9.44 lakh eligible voters, including 23,033 first-time voters aged 18-19.

The Election Commission announced the election schedule during a press conference, with counting of votes for all states and Puducherry set for May 4. Special intensive revisions of voter lists have been conducted, and Central Observers have been deployed under constitutional powers to oversee the electoral process.

These elections are viewed as a critical political test, reflecting regional dynamics and national party strategies, with campaigning expected to escalate in the coming weeks.
