BJP Leader Condemns Punjab Government Actions Against Media Group
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bansuri Swaraj launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab on Friday. She accused the state administration of orchestrating a deliberate assault on media freedom and democratic dissent. Swaraj made these strong allegations during a press conference held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi.
Raids Represent Systematic Repression, Says Swaraj
The BJP parliamentarian stated that recent raids targeting the Punjab Kesari Group demonstrate a clear pattern of political repression. She claimed these actions directly resulted from critical reporting against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. According to Swaraj, the Punjab government has completely misused state machinery to intimidate the media organization.
"This represents a planned attack on media freedom carried out at Arvind Kejriwal's direction," Swaraj declared forcefully. "The AAP government shows itself incapable of handling criticism or answering legitimate questions about poor governance."
Drawing Parallels with Emergency Period
Swaraj drew historical comparisons that many will find striking. She specifically referenced the Congress party's actions during the 1975 Emergency. "This politics of repression follows a consistent pattern," she observed. "It strongly reminds us of attacks on media carried out by the Congress during the Emergency period."
The BJP leader pointed to a particular article published on October 31, 2025 as the triggering event. She asserted that criticism of the government in that piece prompted what she called a "well-planned attack" against the media group.
Accusations of Dictatorial Mindset
Swaraj characterized the government's actions as demonstrating a dictatorial mindset. She argued that silencing dissenting voices reveals the AAP's fundamental tendency to avoid accountability. "Instead of responding to criticism, they choose to suppress media voices," she stated bluntly.
The New Delhi MP emphasized that such repression tactics are not new developments. She described them as part of an established pattern where questioning authority brings retaliatory action. Her comments reflect growing political tensions between national and state governments regarding press freedom issues.
This confrontation highlights ongoing debates about the relationship between elected governments and independent media institutions in India's vibrant democracy.
