In a major crackdown on traffic violations during the Indian Premier League (IPL) final night, the Bengaluru traffic police seized 87 vehicles and collected fines amounting to over Rs 3.9 lakh. The special enforcement drives were conducted across the city to ensure road safety and discipline, particularly targeting drunk driving and other serious offenses.
Intensive Checking at Key Locations
The traffic police set up multiple checkpoints at strategic locations, including major junctions, pubs, and entertainment hubs. A total of 87 vehicles were impounded for various violations, with drunk driving being the most common offense. The police also booked cases against individuals found driving under the influence of alcohol.
Fines and Legal Action
Apart from vehicle seizures, the authorities collected Rs 3,91,600 in fines from violators. The traffic police registered 112 cases for drunk driving, 45 cases for rash driving, and 28 cases for other traffic rule violations. The drive aimed to send a strong message to motorists about the consequences of negligent driving.
Public Reaction and Safety Concerns
The crackdown received mixed reactions from the public. While many appreciated the police's efforts to prevent accidents and maintain order, some criticized the timing and intensity of the checks. However, traffic police officials emphasized that such drives are essential to reduce road fatalities and ensure the safety of all road users.
Comparisons with Previous Operations
This operation was one of the largest single-night enforcement drives in recent months. In comparison, regular weekend checks usually result in seizure of 30-40 vehicles. The increase in numbers reflects the heightened vigilance during high-profile events like the IPL final.
The Bengaluru traffic police have urged citizens to follow traffic rules and avoid drunk driving. They also announced that similar enforcement drives will continue in the future to curb traffic violations and enhance road safety.
