The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replaced its candidate for the Bankipur assembly bypoll after the original nominee withdrew from the race. Neeraj Kumar Sinha has been announced as the new candidate, according to a party statement on Friday.
Original Nominee Withdraws
The BJP's initial candidate for the Bankipur seat had filed nomination papers but subsequently withdrew candidature, necessitating a replacement. The party moved swiftly to name Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its candidate for the crucial by-election.
Bypoll Schedule
The bypoll to the Bankipur assembly constituency will be held on July 30, 2026, with counting of votes scheduled for August 3, 2026. The last date for filing nominations was July 13, 2026, according to the Election Commission's schedule.
The Bankipur seat fell vacant following the resignation of the sitting MLA, who had won on a BJP ticket in the 2025 state assembly elections. The by-election is seen as a test of the party's popularity in the region.
Political Significance
Bankipur is a key constituency in Patna district and has traditionally been a stronghold of the BJP. The party is keen to retain the seat to maintain its hold in the Bihar legislative assembly. The bypoll comes amid shifting political alliances in the state, with the BJP-led NDA facing challenges from the opposition Mahagathbandhan.
Neeraj Kumar Sinha, a former district president of the BJP's youth wing, is considered a grassroots worker with strong organizational skills. His candidature is expected to consolidate the party's support base in the constituency.
According to political analysts, the bypoll will be closely watched as it may indicate the mood of the electorate ahead of the 2027 Bihar assembly elections. The opposition has criticized the BJP for changing candidates at the last minute, calling it a sign of internal discord.
