BJP Links Channi's Reported Displeasure to Congress Infighting, Says New Cracks Emerging
BJP Links Channi's Displeasure to Congress Infighting

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday seized on reports of former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's displeasure with the Congress leadership, asserting that new fissures were appearing within the opposition party ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.

BJP's Allegations of Congress Infighting

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters that the reported dissatisfaction of Channi, who was replaced as chief minister by the Congress last year, indicated deep internal strife. "The Congress party is in turmoil. Charanjit Singh Channi's reported anger shows that there is no unity within the party. New cracks are emerging every day," Patra said.

Patra's comments came after media reports suggested that Channi was unhappy with the party's decision to appoint a new state unit chief and other organizational changes. The BJP leader claimed that the Congress was unable to manage its own internal affairs, let alone govern the state effectively.

Channi's Reported Displeasure

According to sources, Channi has expressed dissatisfaction with the Congress high command over the handling of party affairs in Punjab. The former chief minister is believed to be upset with the appointment of Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president, replacing Navjot Singh Sidhu. Channi reportedly felt sidelined in the decision-making process.

Channi, who became the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab in September 2021, had a brief tenure that ended when the Congress decided to change leadership ahead of the 2022 assembly elections. He was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi's own government fell after the Congress lost the election to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Political Implications

The BJP's attack comes as political parties gear up for the Punjab assembly elections, which are expected to be held early next year. The Congress is already facing challenges from the AAP, which won a landslide victory in the 2022 elections, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The BJP, which is contesting in alliance with the Punjab Lok Congress, hopes to capitalize on any divisions within the Congress.

Political analysts say that infighting in the Congress could benefit the BJP and its allies. "Any sign of disunity in the Congress will be exploited by the BJP to project itself as a stable alternative," said a political commentator.

Congress Response

The Congress party has dismissed the BJP's claims as baseless. Party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "The BJP is trying to divert attention from its own failures. The Congress is united and ready to take on the BJP in Punjab." However, the reported displeasure of Channi, a prominent Dalit leader, could pose a challenge for the Congress in retaining its Dalit vote bank.

Channi himself has not publicly commented on the reports, but his silence has fueled speculation. The Congress leadership is likely to make efforts to pacify him to avoid any further damage to the party's prospects in the state.
