BJP Leaders Gather for Presidential Election, Nitin Nabin Set to Take Helm
BJP Presidential Election: Nitin Nabin Likely Unopposed

BJP Leaders Converge for Presidential Election Process

Top BJP leaders from across India will gather at the party headquarters on Monday. Chief ministers, state unit presidents, and prominent party figures will participate in the election for the BJP's national president.

Party sources indicate Nitin Nabin will likely become the 12th national president without opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah support his candidature for this crucial role.

Election Schedule and Process

The BJP national returning officer K Laxman announced the detailed election schedule. Nomination papers will be filed between 2 pm and 4 pm on Monday. Scrutiny of these nominations will occur from 4 pm to 5 pm on January 19.

Nomination withdrawals can happen between 5 pm and 6 pm on the same day. The party will announce the new national president's name on Tuesday after completing the election process.

"Almost all of our chief ministers will attend this important occasion," a BJP source told PTI. "State unit presidents and other key leaders will also join us here."

About Nitin Nabin

Nitin Nabin serves as a five-time Bihar MLA. The party appointed him as BJP national working president in December 2025. He will submit his nomination for the national president's position on Monday.

The BJP elects its national president through an electoral college system. This college includes representatives from both national and state councils. The national returning officer oversees the entire election process.

Constitutional Requirements

The BJP constitution outlines specific requirements for presidential candidates:

  • Candidates must have twenty members from a state's electoral college jointly propose their name
  • They need four terms as active members and fifteen years of party membership
  • Such joint proposals must come from at least five states where national council elections have concluded

K Laxman clarified the election timeline on Friday. "If necessary, polling will occur on January 20," he stated. "We will announce the new BJP national president's name officially on that same day."

Political observers expect Nitin Nabin to secure the position without facing any challengers. This transition marks a significant moment for India's ruling party as it prepares for future political challenges.
