In the aftermath of the Rajya Sabha elections, political dynamics in Haryana have taken a dramatic turn, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reportedly making preparations to induct six Congress legislators into its fold. This development comes as cross-voting within the Congress camp has been exposed, leading to internal strife and threats of disciplinary action from senior party leaders.
Congress Fault Lines Exposed by Independent Candidate's Gamble
The BJP-backed Independent candidate, Satish Nandal, may have fallen short in the Rajya Sabha polls, but his candidacy successfully revealed deep-seated divisions within the Congress. A senior BJP leader stated, "We had nothing to lose by backing an Independent. The Congress won, but we managed to drive home the point that Hooda cannot hold his flock together." The leader further revealed that, with clearance from the party top brass, the BJP is likely to induct over half a dozen MLAs in the coming weeks.
Congress Leadership Issues Stern Warnings to Cross-Voters
In response to the cross-voting, Congress general secretary in-charge BK Hariprasad announced that show-cause notices would be served soon to the errant legislators. Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda issued a stern ultimatum, saying, "These individuals should voluntarily resign, failing which the party will initiate disciplinary action against them. They will be taught a lesson, not just by the party but also by their respective constituencies." The first resignation has already been submitted by Ramkishen Gujjar, a working president of the Congress, to the party high command.
BJP Sees Opportunity for Strategic Gains Ahead of Delimitation
Sources within the BJP camp indicated that the Rajya Sabha election served as a loyalty test for Congress MLAs who had been approaching the BJP leadership for support. A senior party functionary noted, "We wanted to see if they would openly come out in our favour when the need arose. They did." Additionally, the BJP views this as an opportunity to strengthen its position ahead of upcoming delimitation exercises, which could expand avenues for political adjustments and seat-sharing in the state.
Congress Unity Claims Challenged as MLAs Express Disillusionment
State BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli asserted that Congress's claims of unity have fallen flat, alleging that its MLAs were "pressured and tortured." Meanwhile, Congress MLA Kuldeep Vats, whose name surfaced on social media as a cross-voter, clarified that he voted for the party candidate. However, a disillusioned Vats expressed his distress, stating, "I am very disturbed after finding my name on the list. The Congress does not value loyalists and those who work hard. I will quit the party soon."
