NEW DELHI: In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Anupam Biswas emerged victorious from the Kalyani constituency, defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Dr. Atindra Nath Mondal. Kalyani is a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat located in the Nadia district and is part of the Bangaon Lok Sabha constituency.
The constituency encompasses the planned township of Kalyani, a significant urban center renowned for its university and research institutions, along with surrounding rural areas. In the 2021 Assembly elections, BJP's Ambika Roy had won the seat with 97,026 votes, defeating TMC's Aniruddha Biswas by a narrow margin of just 2,206 votes, marking one of the closest contests in the district that year.
Looking back at previous elections, in 2016, TMC's Ramendra Nath Biswas won comfortably with 95,795 votes, beating the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Alakesh Das by 26,095 votes. In 2011, Biswas also prevailed for TMC with a margin of 15,690 votes. The Kalyani constituency has proven to be fiercely competitive, with the 2021 outcome illustrating how thin the margin can be.
This year's election saw a direct contest between the BJP and TMC, with the BJP fielding Anupam Biswas against TMC's Atindra Nath Mondal. The result reflects the ongoing political dynamics in West Bengal, where the BJP has been striving to expand its footprint. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the TVK party emerged as a formidable force, pushing the DMK and AIADMK to the margins. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee lagged behind Suvendu Adhikari after the second round in Bhabanipur, while the BJP is expected to retain Assam.
The 2026 elections have seen intense competition across states, with voters casting their ballots for assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.
