NEW DELHI: In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ashim Kumar Biswas emerged victorious in the Ranaghat Dakshin (Scheduled Caste) constituency, defeating All India Trinamool Congress candidate Sougata Kumar Burman. The constituency, located in Nadia district, recorded a total of 2,53,346 registered voters, comprising 1,30,916 male, 1,22,428 female, and 2 third-gender electors.

West Bengal voted across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026, with a combined turnout of nearly 93 percent — the highest since Independence and among the largest in Indian electoral history. Ranaghat Dakshin is a Scheduled Caste-reserved assembly constituency in West Bengal's Nadia district and forms part of the Ranaghat (SC) Lok Sabha constituency. According to the 2011 Census, the constituency has a predominantly rural profile, with 63.88 percent of voters residing in rural areas and 36.13 percent in urban pockets. Scheduled Castes constituted 38.56 percent of the electorate in the 2021 elections, while Scheduled Tribes accounted for 4.14 percent and Muslims for 14.20 percent.

Historical Election Results

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the constituency had 285,180 electors and recorded 241,687 valid votes. BJP candidate Mukut Mani Adhikari won the seat with 119,260 votes, defeating TMC's Barnali Dey Roy, who secured 102,745 votes, by a margin of 16,515 votes. In the 2016 Assembly elections, Ranaghat Dakshin had 257,811 electors and 219,215 valid votes. CPI(M) candidate Rama Biswas won with 104,159 votes, defeating TMC's Abir Ranjan Biswas (86,906 votes) by a margin of 17,253 votes. Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, the constituency had 222,418 electors and 194,083 valid votes. TMC candidate Abir Ranjan Biswas won with 99,432 votes, defeating CPI(M) candidate Aloke Kumar Das (79,824 votes) by a margin of 19,608 votes.

Voter Turnout Trends

Voter turnout has remained high in the constituency, with 85.06 percent recorded in the 2016 Assembly elections and around 83 percent in the 2019 parliamentary polls. The 2026 elections saw a further increase, reflecting the overall trend in the state.
