NEW DELHI: Ashwini Ray Sarkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Golakganj assembly seat in Assam, defeating Kartik Chandra Ray of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 30,782 votes.

Sarkar secured 1,10,533 votes, while Ray polled 79,751. Jamsher Talukdar of the All India United Democratic Front finished a distant third with 2,485 votes, while candidates from the Rashtriya Ulama Council and others secured marginal numbers. NOTA recorded 1,120 votes.

Golakganj, a general constituency in Dhubri district and part of the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, was among those reorganised under the 2023 delimitation exercise. The contest was closely watched as the BJP’s Sarkar faced Congress candidate Ray in a direct fight.

The result marks a turnaround from 2021, when Congress’s Abdus Sobahun Ali Sarkar had won the seat comfortably, defeating Ashwini Ray Sarkar by over 10,000 votes. The 2026 outcome signals a shift in voter preference in the constituency.

The Assam assembly elections recorded a historic turnout of 85.9%, the highest since 1951. Women voters registered a turnout of 86.5%, surpassing male participation at 85.3%, reflecting strong electoral engagement across the state.
