In a significant electoral outcome from West Bengal's Chandipur constituency, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pijush Kanti Das emerged victorious, defeating Uttam Barik of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to the Election Commission's website, Das polled 126,047 votes, while Barik secured 105,777 votes.
Background of the Constituency
The Chandipur assembly constituency, located in the Purba Medinipur district, was previously represented by Soham Chakraborty of the Trinamool Congress. In the 2021 election, Chakraborty won with 109,770 votes, defeating BJP's Pulak Kanti Guria, who received 96,298 votes, by a margin of 13,472 votes. The voter turnout in that election was an impressive 92.76%.
Key Challenges in Chandipur
The region grapples with several pressing issues, including rural unemployment, agricultural distress caused by erratic monsoons, inadequate irrigation facilities, and poor rural road connectivity. Frequent flooding from nearby rivers, coupled with limited industrial growth beyond fishing and small-scale units, exacerbates poverty levels.
Geographical and Political Context
Chandipur covers the Chandipur CD block and parts of the Bhagabanpur I block, falling under the Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency. It is a general seat known for tight contests between the Trinamool Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or the BJP. Previous MLAs include Amiya Kanti Bhattacharjee, who served from 2011 to 2016.
The local economy relies heavily on paddy cultivation, aquaculture, and salt production. Voter turnout in the constituency has consistently remained above 88%.
Elections in the state are scheduled for 2026, and this result is seen as a key indicator of shifting political dynamics in West Bengal.
