The Bharatiya Janata Party's Subrata Kabiraj emerged victorious in the Tehatta assembly constituency, defeating the Trinamool Congress candidate Dilip Poddar in the 2026 West Bengal legislative elections. The constituency, located in the Nadia district, recorded a total of 2,52,431 registered voters, comprising 1,31,243 males, 1,21,184 females, and 4 individuals from the third gender.
Record Voter Turnout
West Bengal conducted its assembly elections across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026. The combined voter turnout reached nearly 93 percent, marking the highest participation since independence and one of the largest in Indian electoral history. This surge was not limited to rural areas but was also observed in urban centers, with women voters outpacing men significantly.
Constituency Background
Tehatta is a general category seat and one of the seven assembly segments under the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2021 assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress candidate Tapas Kumar Saha had won the seat, defeating the BJP's Ashutosh Paul by a margin of 6,915 votes. However, in the 2026 elections, the BJP managed to flip the seat. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress candidate Mahua Moitra won the Krishnanagar parliamentary seat, defeating the BJP's Rajmata Amrita Roy by a margin of 56,705 votes.
Historical Voting Patterns
The Tehatta constituency did not exist between 1977 and 2006. Between 1951 and 1972, the Congress party dominated the seat, winning six out of seven elections, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured it once in 1971. In 2021, the constituency had 252,454 registered voters, an increase from 243,427 in 2019. Scheduled Castes accounted for 32.97 percent of the electorate, while Muslims made up 28.50 percent. Voter turnout has consistently been high, with 86.36 percent in 2016, 83.71 percent in 2019, and 89.10 percent in 2021.
Election Highlights
In the 2026 elections, the BJP's victory in Tehatta is part of a broader trend where the party has made gains in West Bengal. Meanwhile, Vijay's TVK party has emerged as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu, and Mamata Banerjee's TMC faces challenges from Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur. The overall results indicate a shift in political dynamics, with the BJP potentially ousting Mamata in Bengal while retaining Assam.
