NEW DELHI: In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party's Swapan Kumar Das emerged victorious in the Santipur constituency, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Braja Kishore Goswami. The Santipur assembly seat, located in Nadia district, is a general category constituency.

Voter Statistics and Demographics

The electoral rolls for the 2026 assembly election in Santipur listed a total of 2,27,477 registered voters. This included 1,18,363 male voters, 1,09,105 female voters, and 9 voters belonging to the third gender. Although the seat is general, Scheduled Castes constitute a significant 33.54 percent of the electorate, while Scheduled Tribes account for 2.49 percent and Muslims around 14 percent. The constituency has a mixed urban-rural profile, with 63.76 percent of voters residing in urban municipal wards and 36.24 percent in villages.

Historical Election Results

In the 2021 assembly elections, Santipur had 255,619 electors and recorded 219,692 valid votes. BJP candidate Jagannath Sarkar won the seat with 109,722 votes, defeating Trinamool Congress's Ajoy Dey, who secured 93,844 votes. The victory margin was 15,878 votes. In 2016, the constituency had 225,358 electors and 200,080 valid votes. Congress candidate Arindam Bhattacharya won with 103,566 votes, while Trinamool's Ajoy Dey finished second with 84,078 votes, losing by 19,488 votes. Earlier, in 2011, the constituency had 190,634 electors and 171,189 valid votes. Congress candidate Ajoy Dey won with 98,902 votes, defeating Iyar Mallik of the Revolutionary Communist Party of India (Rasik Bhatt), who secured 60,744 votes. The margin of victory was 38,158 votes.

Voter Turnout Trends

Voter turnout in Santipur has been high but has gradually declined over time. It fell from 89.75 percent in 2011 to 83.06 percent in 2024. In intervening elections, turnout stood at 88.83 percent in 2016, 86.61 percent in 2019, and 86.16 percent in 2021. The number of registered voters has increased from 190,634 in 2011 to 225,358 in 2016, 241,506 in 2019, 255,619 in 2021, and 258,315 in 2024.

Statewide Context

West Bengal voted across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recording a combined turnout of nearly 93 percent, the highest since Independence. The surge was notable in urban centres, with women voters outpacing men. Repolling for the Falta assembly constituency has been scheduled for May 21. In the 2026 elections, the BJP-led alliance has won in West Bengal, while in Tamil Nadu, Vijay's TVK party emerged as a formidable force. The DMK and AIADMK were pushed to the margins. In Kerala, the UDF won, and in Assam, the BJP retained power. In Puducherry, the NDA won.
