The central government has confirmed that sufficient seeds are available for the upcoming kharif season, but has raised concerns over uneven distribution and local shortages, particularly in certain states. The government also urged proactive measures to address the emerging risk of El Nino, which could impact crop yields.
Seed Availability and Distribution Challenges
According to an official statement, the Ministry of Agriculture has assured that overall seed stocks are adequate to meet the demand for the kharif season. However, the ministry flagged that distribution has been uneven, leading to localized shortages in some regions. States have been advised to streamline supply chains and ensure timely delivery to farmers.
The government emphasized the need for close monitoring of seed availability at the district level. Officials have been directed to coordinate with state agriculture departments to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable access. The Centre also urged states to utilize the seed bank mechanism to address any shortfalls.
El Nino Risk and Proactive Measures
The government has also warned of the potential impact of El Nino on the monsoon, which could affect sowing and crop growth. Farmers have been advised to adopt climate-resilient practices, including the use of drought-tolerant seed varieties. The Ministry of Agriculture is working with the Indian Meteorological Department to provide real-time weather updates and advisories.
“We are closely monitoring the El Nino situation and have prepared contingency plans to minimize its impact on agriculture,” said a senior agriculture ministry official. The government has also encouraged states to promote water-saving techniques and efficient irrigation methods.
Impact on Farmers and Crop Production
The kharif season, which typically runs from June to October, is crucial for India’s food security. Major crops include rice, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. Any disruption in seed availability or adverse weather could affect production and farmer incomes. The government has assured that it will take all necessary steps to support farmers, including providing financial assistance and subsidized inputs.
“We are committed to ensuring that no farmer faces a shortage of seeds or other essential inputs,” the official added. The Centre has also launched a helpline for farmers to report issues related to seed availability and quality.
