BJP leader and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that the central government is considering issuing a commemorative stamp for spiritual leader Karunakara Guru. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia for advancing the proposal.
Proposal forwarded to relevant authorities
Chandrasekhar stated that the matter has been taken up with the Department of Posts, which will evaluate the proposal. The commemorative stamp would honor Karunakara Guru's contributions to spirituality and social service. Karunakara Guru was the founder of the Santhigiri Ashram in Kerala, known for his teachings on interfaith harmony and human values.
Political and social significance
The announcement comes ahead of the guru's birth centenary celebrations. Chandrasekhar emphasized that the stamp would be a fitting tribute to a leader who promoted unity and service. According to Chandrasekhar, the move reflects the government's recognition of spiritual leaders who have shaped India's cultural ethos.
Karunakara Guru passed away in 1999, but his legacy continues through the ashram's charitable activities. The stamp, if approved, would be part of a series honoring notable Indian saints and social reformers.
