The Central government on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it would bring back four more individuals, including the husband of Sunali, from Bangladesh within ten days. This development comes after the government had earlier repatriated Sunali, a pregnant woman, and her eight-year-old son.
Supreme Court Hearing
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant was apprised by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the Union government has decided to facilitate the return of the other four deportees and conduct a thorough examination of their nationality. The continuation of their stay in India will depend on the outcome of this fresh scrutiny.
Background of the Case
On December 1, the Supreme Court, while hearing a petition filed by Bhodu Sekh seeking the repatriation of his daughter Sunali, her husband, and others, had directed the government to examine whether Sunali could be brought back to India. The Calcutta High Court had earlier termed the deportation of the family illegal and directed the Union government to bring them back. The Centre subsequently appealed against the High Court order before the Supreme Court.
Government's Assurance
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that the government would act swiftly to bring back the remaining individuals and verify their citizenship status. He emphasized that the process would be completed within the stipulated ten-day period.
