Protestors in Mysuru staged a charkha satyagraha on Wednesday to express their opposition to the Election Commission's rejection of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan's Rajya Sabha nomination. The demonstration took place near the Deputy Commissioner's office.
Background of the Dispute
Meenakshi Natarajan, a prominent Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh, had filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections. However, the Election Commission rejected her nomination papers citing discrepancies in the signature of the proposer. The Congress party has alleged that the rejection was politically motivated.
Charkha Satyagraha as a Form of Protest
The protestors, including local Congress workers and supporters, sat with spinning wheels (charkhas) to symbolically recreate Mahatma Gandhi's form of non-violent protest. They demanded that the Election Commission reconsider its decision and allow Natarajan to contest the election.
Speaking at the protest, Congress leaders accused the Election Commission of acting under pressure from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They claimed that the rejection was part of a larger pattern of targeting opposition leaders.
Reactions from Political Circles
The Congress party has announced plans to challenge the rejection in court. Party spokesperson said, "This is a clear violation of democratic norms. The Election Commission must be impartial." Meanwhile, the BJP dismissed the allegations, stating that the rejection was based purely on technical grounds.
The Rajya Sabha election for the seat in question is scheduled for next month. The Congress party is hopeful that legal intervention will restore Natarajan's candidature.
