Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath actively campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal during the recent assembly elections. According to party sources, he addressed rallies and roadshows across 22 constituencies in the state. Out of these, the BJP emerged victorious in 14 seats, highlighting the effectiveness of his campaign.
Strategic Campaigning
Yogi Adityanath's campaign focused on key issues such as development, law and order, and national security. His speeches often targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) over alleged corruption and political violence. The BJP leadership strategically deployed him in areas where the party aimed to consolidate Hindu votes and expand its footprint.
Impact on Results
The 14 seats won by the BJP in constituencies where Yogi campaigned represent a significant contribution to the party's overall tally in West Bengal. Analysts believe his aggressive oratory and appeal among certain voter segments helped sway undecided voters. However, the TMC retained power with a comfortable majority, winning 213 seats in the 294-member assembly.
Other Campaigners
Apart from Yogi Adityanath, other prominent BJP leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also campaigned extensively in West Bengal. Modi addressed over 20 rallies, while Shah held multiple roadshows and public meetings. The party's central leadership had marked West Bengal as a key battleground state for expanding its influence beyond Hindi-speaking regions.
Despite the BJP's improved performance compared to the 2016 elections, where it won only 3 seats, the party fell short of its target of forming the government. The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, secured a third consecutive term with a landslide victory.
Yogi Adityanath's campaign in West Bengal is seen as part of the BJP's long-term strategy to make inroads in states where it has traditionally been weak. The party plans to build on this momentum in future elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
